This book originally appeared in the mid-Sixties in the Batsford British Battles series. It considers briefly but elegantly the operations (mostly on the British-Canadian front) up to the Seine. Whereas many battle accounts tend to be very detailed and rather partisan Essame and Belfield write with verve and a lightness of style. Essame commanded a battalion in the campaign and thus easily introduces us to the world of the squaddie (and indeed of his enemy) Yet the judgements of the senior commanders are also well made and sagacious. The authors lack the partisan desire to knock down one leader to build up another; indeed some might object that they are too kind in their judgements. But then, they were there and we were not. Given its size and subject the scale of the history is fairly high. You will want other books if you want to follow the action in detail, but this book is excellent for giving the "story arc". I have read it many times and commend it to you.
